Book Review - Stephen King's 'Lisey's Story'

Title: Lisey's Story
Author: Stephen King
Publisher: Pocket Books
Year Published: 2007
Category: Fiction - Psychological Thriller Fantasy Romance (kekeke)
Number of pages: 653
Stars: ★★★★✰

This has been King's sixth work that I've read, and it's just as fabulous as the others. There are two reasons that I did not give it five stars. First was because it took me more than twenty pages to get into it, unlike his other works which got me hooked on the first page. Second was it took me a whole week to read it. There were quite a few times where I had to reread a few pages to understand certain events of the story, there were so many flashbacks. But all in all, it was yet another masterpiece.

For those who are questioning my ability to set a category for this novel, well, read it yourself and you will find it quite hard to pin a category on it. Basically, it's about a widow of a famous writer, who took two years to find the courage to go through her husband's study. Fast forward, she got into trouble with a psycho fan of her husband's works. So that's where all the psychology thing comes in. Both the psycho fan (a.k.a Jim Dooley) and the widow (a.k.a Lisey) had quite a showdown. The thriller part comes in when the psycho fan got more brutal in harassing Lisey (beaten her face and tortured her chest with a can opener ಠ_ಠ) and blackmailed her. But Lisey was a take no bullshit type of woman, plus her husband's voice in her head seemed to be helping her to fight Jim Dooley. The fantasy part comes in with the introduction of Boo'ya Moon, apparently a place in another dimension where Lisey's husband found sanctuary since he was a child and will play an important role in the story. Last, the romance, well, it couldn't get anymore romancey than thinking that your dead husband is still talking to you and guiding you, right? The novel did end in a very tear inducing and heart wrenching way. I believe Stephen King proved his mastery of fiction with this novel, combining psychology, thriller, romance, and fantasy aspects into one great meaningful story is no mean feat.

I would recommend this book for those who like a good romance novel to pass the time with. If you're no fan of flashbacks in fiction, I assure you, the flashbacks were necessary for the story to evolve in an 'Oooh, I didn't expect that!' kind of way. So don't be put off if you're not instantly hooked with this one.

Happy reading! Tell me what you think about my review or the novel (◕‿-)

  1. Great review. I've been a King fan all my life and I have found that some stories take more time to suck me in. I started Lisey's Story years ago and it didn't pull me in right away so I set it down and haven't picked it back up since (it wasn't my copy so I didn't have it at home). Good to know that it does get better. Thanks!
