Finally! The day that you've all been waiting for! It's time to fly to the U.S.!

I was still smiling here LOL

Even as I said my goodbyes to my family, I still couldn't believe that I'm finally moving to the U.S.! It was like a dream. I was on auto pilot, and I didn't cry until I was at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta. My feelings were all jumbled up! I was happy because I'm finally going to be a student again, with an awesome scholarship! On the other hand I was sad, and frankly scared because I wasn't sure how I'll survive alone. Will I make friends? Or will I just be another graduate nerd. I guess you could say that it was bitter-sweet.

My last night in Indonesia, I slept in my parents hotel room although AMINEF booked me a room to share with another Fulbrighter. I think at that time my parents also still couldn't believe that their eldest daughter will be travelling to the other side of the world alone. They were as nervous as I was. What if I somehow ended up in Africa or something? Haha. We talked all night long. They hugged me tight.

We had to wake up before the break of dawn. My first leg of the flight was from Jakarta to Tokyo-Narita. I was pretty excited because I've been to Narita Airport before. I really wanted to get some Japanese gifts to decorate my new room in Iowa.

We arrived about two hours before boarding. I suggest you do the same. Don't take Jakarta's traffic lightly! You don't want to look stupid by missing your flight. It's better to just get ready earlier, take a nice shower, and relax once you get to the airport. I said my goodbyes pretty quickly, couldn't stand my aunt and uncle's tears (Yeah you guys, they went to Jakarta to send me off! I'm their favorite niece XD). Hugged my little sister a bit longer, since we were actually starting to get sisterly you know, no more bitching about each other! And then in I went to the immigration place thingy after getting my boarding passes and checking my two fat luggage. I only had a backpack and a small fanny pack where I stored my documents and some money.

I Am Back To Revive This Blog!

Hello dear readers! 

I can't believe it... my last post was posted in 2016! Four years later, and I've decided to at least get the My Fulbright Journey post series completed. 

It's been a crazy past three years for me. I graduated with a Masters in TESL/Applied Linguistics from Iowa State University in 2017. I then stayed in Ames, Iowa to pursue my PhD in Applied Linguistics and Technology also at ISU. This is now Fall 2020, and I'm a fourth-year PhD student! FOURTH-year. Jeez, it sounds so alien to me.

Anyways, some things that I'd like to talk about in my future posts (aside from the My Fulbright Journey posts that I PROMISE I'll post) are:

• Being involved in student organizations as a graduate student.
• How Ames has become my new home away from home. 
• Being my own advocate: How to promote yourself as a graduate student.
• Doing research in a Tier 1 research university.
• Working as a research and teaching assistant at a U.S. university.

F.A.Q (Frequently Asked Questions)

Hello dear readers!

Wow, this summer has been a blast! And by a blast, I mean, I slept, ate, watched, read for pleasure a lot. So much so that I completely forgot that I had other things to do! Like updating my blog.

So here I am, dear readers. I read and replied to most of the comments on this blog and emails that were sent to me. Not surprisingly, there were questions that get asked more often than others. Therefore I tried to compile a list of these frequently asked questions to make everything easier for everyone! 1. Which is harder, IELTS or TOEFL IBT?

Answer: Both are hard! Especially if you don't prepare. Uh, duh. Hahaha. The IELTS (Academic) and TOEFL IBT both attempts to assess your English proficiency in an academic context. However, they do it quite differently. Although they both have listening, reading, speaking, and writing tests, their question types are very different. So I learned for IELTS first and then I found out I had to take a TOEFL IBT test. Then I learned for that, and although some skills did transfer (e.g. skimming and scanning), the TOEFL IBT test just had a totally different format. I just had to learn other skills, like note-taking. So, no, I can't say that IELTS was easier and TOEFL IBT was harder and vice versa.

Selain skore TOEFL/IELTS, surat referensi, essay juga sangat penting sebagai syarat utama diterima sebagai penerima beasiswa. Setiap program biasanya punya istilah tersendiri dalam mengartikan “essay”. Kadang dengan istilah “ Study Objective”, “Personal Statement”, “Motivation Letter” atau bahkan ada yang hanya dengan menjawab beberapa pertanyaan di form aplikasi dengan batasan kata atau karakter tertentu.

Apapun istilahnya intinya para reviewer beasiswa ingin tahu kenapa teman-teman tertarik ikut program tersebut, dari sekian banyak pelamar kenapa anda layak diberi kesempatan ini, apa kaitan program yang teman-teman ingin pelajari dengan pengalaman dan jurusan sebelumnya, dan yang pasti apa dampak/kontribusi anda setelah kembali ke Indonesia. Nah….makanya essay sangat penting untuk merubah status teman-teman dari pelamar (applicants) ke penerima (recipients) beasiswa.

5 Ways I Procrastinate Productively (as a Graduate Student)

It's the 9th week of the Spring semester, a.k.a my second semester as a graduate student in the U.S. Alhamdulillah, so far I feel like I'm on the right track. Currently working on my thesis proposal (Tentative title: Designing and creating video materials to promote communicative L2 ability and enhance wilingness to communicate in academic and social settings), waiting to hear from my *cross-your fingers* soon to be out-of-department committee member, thinking about my PhD plans (I know, I know, I'm way ahead of myself), and working on some research ideas. I'm living the life that I want and enjoy it immensely.

But compared to last semester, I've been procrastinating a lot. I like to say that I'm having fun, too much. My friends insist that there's no such thing as having too much fun. I say there is, and it's called chronic procrastination, with a twist. I'm saying with a twist because procrastination is always perceived as wasting your time and being unproductive. However, the optimistic me looks at procrastination using a whole new lense.

I’m so behind with writing this whole series! I promised that I would write more during winter break, but I was too busy having so much fun, which I will talk about in another post! But for now, I still need to share about my journey to arrive in the U.S. using the Fulbright scholarship!

Well, ditahap ini ada dua hal yang menjadi perhatian: (1) Urusan visa dan (2) Packing. JANGAN SEKALI-KALI MEMANDANG ENTENG PACKING! Saya bahkan packing dua bulan sebelum keberangkatan. Tetapi, sebelum kita bicara tentang packing, saya akan berbagi sedikit tentang urusan visa yang juga cukup mendebarkan.

Pertama-tama, seperti biasa Anda akan mendengar kabar dari AMINEF. Seharusnya pada tahap ini, teman-teman juga sudah mendengar kabar dari universitas yang Anda daftari melalui AMINEF. Ingat ya, jangan menghubungi pihak universitasnya langsung. Bila ada pertanyaan, hubungilah pihak AMINEF terlebih dahulu. Jika ternyata pihak universitas menghubungi Anda secara langsung, forwardlah email tersebut kepada AMINEF. Pokoknya jangan sampai ada miskomunikasi antara Anda, AMINEF, dan pihak universitas.

I have been receiving a lot of page views lately. Perhaps because it's the so-called 'scholarship hunting' season? Well, I do hope that my blog posts have been useful for you so far. I'm also trying very hard to write more new posts. I'm currently preparing the 8th post for the 'My Fulbright Journey' series. So please look forward to that!

My Fulbright Journey - Part 7

Undangan Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) yang sangat kunantikan itu datang pada bulan May! Kenapa sangat dinantikan? Karena PDO adalah kesempatan untuk bertemu langsung dengan teman-teman yang sebelumnya cuma kita kenal lewat social media (biasanya disetiap angkatan ada yang berinisiatif buat akun grup di social media seperti Whatsapp atau Facebook) ataupun bertemu lagi dengan kawan-kawan yang sebelumnya dikenal pas tes TOEFL iBT dan/atau GRE. Selain itu ditahap ini semuanya jadi semakin real aja. We are getting closer to our goal! :D

Tahun 2015, PDO diadakan di Kota Yogyakarta, tepatnya di Hotel Melia Purosani yang juga merupakan akomodasi para peserta. Hotel bintang 5 booo....! Selain flight ticket, AMINEF juga akan mengirimkan jadwal kegiatan PDO. Salah satunya adalah malam budaya, dimana dress codenya adalah baju tradisional daerah masing-masing. Ini nih yang aku suka. Dengan sigap, ibu saya membantu mencarikan baju bodo - baju tradisional Makassar - untukku. Yang tradisional, bukan yang udah moderen. Warna bajunya pun aku sesuaikan dengan warna Iowa State University. Cardinal and gold!

My Fulbright Journey – Part 6

Letter of Acceptance sudah di tangan! Apa selanjutnya?

1. Administrative Procedures

Pertama-tama adalah beberapa hal administratif universitas yang perlu Anda selesaikan. Biasanya sudah terdapat petunjuk pada email dan LoA yang kita dapatkan mengenai apa saja yang harus kita lakukan. Contohnya saya diminta melakukan registrasi pada laman khusus mahasiswa ISU. Di laman tersebut yang bernama Accessplus, mahasiswa dapat memilih kelas tiap semesternya, mengakses informasi terkait biaya-biaya yang harus dibayar, mendaftarkan diri untuk housing on-campus dan lain-lain. Di LoA saya sudah dicantumkan student ID dan temporary password untuk akun Accessplus saya. Setelah membuat akun Accessplus, saya lalu membuat akun email ISU. Ini adalah salah satu hal yang saya tunggu-tunggu, memiliki akun email mahasiswa!

Setelah tes TOEFL iBT dan GRE (waktu itu tes yang saya ikuti dua-duanya diadakan pada bulan Oktober) maka Anda akan menunggu untuk final Submission Plan Anda. Submission plan di sini adalah list universitas yang disarankan oleh IIE untuk Anda daftari. Ingat kan penjelasan saya mengenai memilih universitas di Part 3? Waktu itu saya menerima final listnya pada bulan November. Ternyata, pilihan pertama saya yaitu Middlebury College diganti menjadi Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Mungkin karena program studi TESOL di universitas ini kurang kuat, walaupun Middlebury College merupakan private university yang cukup terkenal dalam bidang International Studies. It just proves that the popularity of a university does not guarantee the quality of your particular program of study. So make sure you do a detailed research of the study program in each university of your preference. Gimanaa gitu kalau ternyata setelah direview oleh IIE gak ada satupun pilihan kita yang disetujui. Hehe. Saya bersyukur karena tiga pilihan lain saya berhasil disetujui oleh IIE. Biasanya kita akan diberi waktu sehari untuk memikirkan urutan universitas kita. Jadi sebenarnya ini lumayan mirip SNMPTN (Call it whatever you want, you know what I mean. Hehe), dimana kita harus mengurutkan pilihan kita.

Nah, untuk tes GRE sebenarnya ada dua macam. Tetapi sebelum saya menjelaskan lebih lanjut, mungkin ada yang masih bingung GRE itu apa sih??? Kok baru dengar ya, biasanya kan cuma tes kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang diminta. Yah, sayangnya untuk melamar ke universitas di US Anda diharuskan memiliki GRE test. Tes ini kasarnya mirip TPA. Tapi kali ini TPAnya berbahasa Inggris. Hehehe...

But don’t get caught up in that euphoria because you have so many things to do in a short amount of time! Ya, apalagi kalau bukan melengkapi berkas.. Hehehe. Setelah Anda memperoleh email dari AMINEF terkait keputusan hasil wawancara, Anda juga akan dikirimkan email mengenai berkas apa saja yang harus Anda lengkapi. Salah satunya adalah mengisi Application Form Fulbright di Embark.

Nah, di post ini saya tidak ingin membahas setiap komponen pada aplikasi online tersebut. Email yang dikirimkan AMINEF sudah disertai petunjuk tentang tata cara pengisian aplikasi. What I’d like to share about is the School Preference Section. Pada bagian ini Anda akan diminta untuk memasukkan list universitas yang ingin Anda daftari. Tentunya universitas-universitas ini harus memiliki program studi yang sesuai dengan Study Objective Anda. Ada beberapa faktor lain yang harus Anda pertimbangkan dalam memilih universitas. Berikut akan saya coba bahas satu persatu.

Sangar banget ya judul postingan kali ini. Gara-gara maraton membaca ulang Harry Potter series. Hehe. Maksudnya ‘The Deadly Three’ apa lagi kalau bukan Study Objective, Personal Statement and Writing Sample!!! Yuk, simak penjelasanku di bawah ini (WARNING: Lumayan panjang penjelasannya cyin).

Pada tahap aplikasi, selain harus melengkapi aplikasi dan melampirkan dokumen-dokumen yang diminta (Lihat: List of Fulbright Application Documents Required), Anda diharuskan untuk melampirkan pula sebuah essay yang berjudul ‘Study Objective’ atau kita singkat saja dengan SO. Anda akan menemukan penjelasan seperti di bawah ini pada aplikasi Fulbright Anda terkait dengan SO (Tidak menutup kemungkinan aplikasi setiap tahun akan berubah sehingga struktur maupun isinya berbeda dengan tahun-tahun sebelumnya. Setelah menerima email itu, saya tidak henti-hentinya online dan membaca pengalaman interview para Fulbrighter sebelumnya. Saran saya adalah persiapkan list pertanyaan yang mungkin ditanyakan dan berlatihlah menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut. Apalagi ya, wawancaranya dalam bahasa Inggris, harus lancar dan PD dong menjawabnya. Jadi silahkan membuka link beberapa blog yang telah saya post pada artikel sebelumnya ya. Saya tidak akan memberitahu apa yang harus Anda jawab untuk pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut, karena tiap-tiap individu *pasti* akan memiliki jawaban yang berbeda-beda. Para pewawancara akan tau kok, kalau jawabanmu tidak dari lubuk hati yang paling dalam. Hehe... Kalau saya sering membaca di blog Fulbrighter saran 'Just be yourself', ya karena itu betul sekali. Saya merasakannya sendiri ketika diwawancara. Ketika kita menjadi diri sendiri, wawancaranya jadi mengalir lancar dan tak terasa waktu telah habis. Sama sekali tidak merasa 'diwawancara' tetapi lebih ke diskusi atau perbincangan biasa saja~

I won't let you down...

Terkadang kita terlalu fokus mencari sebuah jalan yang akan mengantarkan kita ke tempat yang kita inginkan. Saking fokusnya kita malah lupa, kalau ada banyak jalan lain yang bisa kita tempuh untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut. I made that mistake in 2013, ketika setelah saya lulus S1 pada bulan Maret dan hanya mendaftarkan diri di satu beasiswa untuk berkuliah di Australia yakni the Australian Development Scholarship (sekarang Australia Awards Scholarship).

Sejak saya kembali dari Australia pada tahun 2001, saya selalu bercita-cita untuk kembali ke Australia. Ayah saya memperoleh beasiswa ADS untuk berkuliah di University of Adelaide dan membawa saya beserta ibu untuk tinggal di Australia selama 3 tahun. Mungkin karena Australia, khususnya Adelaide, sangat berkesan di hati saya sehingga saya menetapkan Australia sebagai tempat tujuan saya untuk kuliah S2. Tak pernah negara lain. Ya, cinta itu memang buta...

Halo halo haloooo!

Wah, wah, blog saya banyak amat debunya~ Bukannya tidak ada waktu, tetapi takut ngeposting tulisan yang gak penting-penting amat alias nyampah (which I have considered a few times. Haha). I have always admired people who have blogs and manage to post regularly, PLUS actually post something that are interesting and/or inspirational. 

Sekarang saya punya alasan yang bagus untuk kembali menulis. Yup! Sesuai dengan judulnya, saya akan berbagi pengalaman mengikuti tes TOEFL iBT. Mungkin ada yang bertanya, kok saya ngambil TOEFL iBT lagi yah, padahal kan udah ada IELTS. Pertanyaan tersebut akan saya jawab di post yang lain. Hehe.

Selama masa persiapan untuk mengikuti tes IELTS, saya menyempatkan diri untuk browsing mengenai pengalaman orang-orang lain ketika mengikuti tes IELTS. Sayangnya, berbagai pengalaman yang diceritakan orang dalam blognya kebanyakan lebih fokus terhadap apa yang mereka lakukan sebelum mengikuti tes dan apa yang terjadi setelah tes. Padahal yang saya sangat ingin ketahui adalah apa yang terjadi selama tes IELTS berlangsung, atau dengan kata lain dari awal hingga akhir dari tes IELTS. Untuk itu, saya menuliskan artikel blog ini untuk berbagi pengalaman saya ketika pertama kali mengikuti tes IELTS, apa saja persiapan saya dan apa yang saya alami ketika tes IELTS.

I've had this written down for quite some time actually. It wasn't supposed to have a title, I suck at title making for my poems, but I thought this one needs a title to catch a particular individual's attention. Whether or not I managed to get his attention, I felt really good after writing this down.

Back then your brows furrowed
Smiles are precious 
Laughs rarely followed

Taking picture perfect moments

Time flies and I know
